I am pretty stoked about an article that I was just interviewed for. PDN put out a twitter request looking for people who were shooting stills and video on the same job, and I responded. I have been interested in motion picture for a while, shooting my first web commercial 3 years ago. I have also been stoked that the cameras I use every day are now shooting HD video. I really am not a brand loyalist, nor am I stuck to one camera for shooting anything. I try my best to look at the job and the budget and figure the best tool for the job. Recently the 5D MarkII has been the tool that fits the bill, it meets alot of new budgetary requirements, and gives a great product. I had the pleasure of shooting a series of TV Spots and a print campaign for the Mobile Regional Airport. PDN asked all kinds of questions, and i hopefully didn’t sound like an idiot. This is the one of the print ads that ran in the PDN article, and the commercials follow.

The Sidewalk Film Festival spot, my first TV commercial! I guess I can add director to my card now. The whole idea of the campaign is showing the passion with which people pursue their art. I just read that the majority of films made today are made for under $30K, by directors who will do anything to see their art on the screen. We took one of our local directors to an old gas station which we felt was the perfect backdrop to the story of his filmmaking experience. Cinematic lighting is something that I have been curiously pursuing for a while. It seems that there aren’t nearly the resources for that as there are for still photography. So, I am taking as much of what I know with stills and applying it the best I can. This shot was actually done in full sun with a 12×12′ 1 stop scrim in between the subject and the sun. It’s probably some of the prettiest light there is.

We have a bright community of filmmakers and photographers in Birmingham. I got the chance to work with my friends at Scout Branding on the collateral advertising this year’s Sidewalk Film Festival. The crazy thing is that I got to not only shoot the stills, but shoot my first aired television spot. I love the idea of guerilla film making, using what’s available to make the best thing you can. It was a great experience, lots of fun, and I am really proud of the products. The print ran as posters and ads in various publications, and hopefully you had the opportunity to see the television spot while it was on air!

I don’t think I have received an award since I got perfect attendance in 6th grade. For any of the awards I have gotten not many were really based on all that much merit. I might as well have received a Grammy Saturday night. It wasn’t that, but it was in fact Photographer of the Year presented by The Birmingham Ad Federation. I am blown away by receiving such an honor. My team worked so hard this year, and WE got the pay off for it. I really feel kind of like Eli Manning. I am no big sports fan, but I ended up watching the Super Bowl this year. Eli is a good quarterback, but come on, without the people that are on his team he is no super bowl winner. When I saw him get the MVP award, I wasn’t that impressed, because I had seen him play and he was pretty inconsistent and had some star players save him several times. So, that’s where I sit. I have been honored to work with some incredible people in this industry here in Birmingham. I was limited to a 7 word acceptance speech, that was “Thank you very much.” So, I wanted to publicly thank those that made this happen for me.

First off, it’s my goal that if anyone sees anything good that I have done, that it will bring glory to Jesus, not in an awards ceremony, “I thank God” kind of way, but I hope that my life accurately represents who Christ is and the incredible change he can bring to ANY life.

Paul Crawford,is one incredible talented dude. He gave me a shot to work in the advertising field, and for that I will always be grateful and loyal. Paul won art director of the year Saturday night, so it was a great privilege to share the platform with him. There are also several incredibly talented art directors that gave me a chance last year, Jason Bickle, Rob Hardison, Ashley Bactad, Ryan Gernenz, and Amy Bickle. These names may not be recognizable to you, but they mean a great deal to me, and if nothing else, here it is a public thanks to them.

My team that I work with regularly is the best there could be. The greatest gift I have is to be able to share every day with my biggest fan. Heather Wallis, my incredible wife of more than 10 years, is the most amazing mom, wife and friend. I am so blessed to have her in my life.
Many of you know Rashel Ross and her story of cancer and how it has affected her life. What I don’t say often enough is how incredibly essential she is to my business. I absolutely could not work at the level and pace that I do without her attention to detail. She is amazing in all that she does with grace and elegance.
Many of you don’t know my assistant’s name. I have failed to introduce him through my blog. His name is Alan Barton, and is probably one of the most consistently upbeat positive people I have met. I don’t think we have ever had a job, or shoot where we had to carry tons of gear, that he has ever complained about it. I am sure the complaining always comes from me! He makes my every day, easier.
You have heard of Celine Chenoweth, Kerri Bunn, Tabitha Boyd, and Missie Crawford. These ladies are incredible stylists that make my pictures look like they are supposed to look. All of the details that really make a shot sing are credited to these ladies.

So, all in all I am so honored to receive this award, but I wish there was enough room on the trophy to put all of these names. It’s our team that makes things happen, I am just glad to be along for the ride with them all.

Here’s our trophy as shot by Alan Barton.

I have been alluding for a few weeks to the national ad campaign that I worked on, and now it is beginning to show up on the newsstand! I probably was a bit overprotective on the time frame of giving all the details, but now I can. The campaign is for the US Postal Inspection Service. It is a public service announcement educating people on internet fraud schemes. Most of the fraud takes place online, and then the illegal actions, sending fake checks, is what makes it a crime that involves the US Postal Service. My great friend, Paul Crawford, is the genius behind the concept of the campaign. He secured the account, and took a chance on hiring me. I think we pulled it off, I believe everyone involved is very happy. I couldn’t have done it without the incredible team we had assembled. My new assistant, Alan Barton (whom I will introduce at some point) came in and rocked it, on his FIRST DAY! Trial by fire. Our hair and makeup artist, the amazing Kerri Bunn, and then the last day a regular around here Celine Chenoweth helped us finish it out. Belinda Martin rocked the wardrobe. Brian Francis a talented photographer in his own right, helped us as the digital technician. Missy Crawford, a stylist that has worked all over the country and done work that you have already seen at some point, hit a home run with the prop styling. As always the essential glue of the team Rashel Ross, made sure everything happened the way it was supposed to. There were also countless others who played key roles from location scouting, to casting to getting food. I couldn’t have done this without my team. I have surrounded myself with excellence, and these people inspire me.

The first magazine that I found the ad in today was in OK Weekly, and then TV Guide. It is on the back page of OK, and page 45 of TV guide. Alan provided us with the first in store photo of the one in TV Guide, seen below the other pics.

I have added these images to my site, as well I have added alot of published work to Gallery 4. I am changing things up a bit and trying to align the elements to help me attain my goal of national editorial and advertising work. So, please send this around, I would love for tons of people to know about it!

They say that the only thing in life for sure is change. Things are changing. Yesterday was my 34th birthday, and I was able to shoot my first national ad campaign, which was extremely cool, although a tad stressful. Funny thing is 4 years ago to the day, on my 30th birthday, I entered the world of professional photography by carrying lights for a local photographer here in Birmingham. I am amazed at how long ago that seemed, but at the same time how fast time has flown. I guess my birthday will be a milemarker in my professional life as well as my personal life from now on. The job that I was able to be a part of was with my good friend Paul Crawford. It is a public service campaign that will show up in weekly magazines starting mid September, and run for 6 weeks or so. Magazines like Time, US Weekly, Newsweek, and some others so keep an eye out! I am pretty stoked that this will have such a reach, I still can’t believe I was able to be a part of it, but happy that it happened. I hope more jobs like this come my way. Once it has run, I will post some of the images.

As I think about how cool that is, I am reminded to keep perspective. Within the last month I have had the complete privilege to photograph 2 warriors. They are women that I am completely in awe of. Women battling cancer while carrying a new life in the womb. Laura Black, and Lorrie Johnson, each came into my life within 2 weeks of each other. Both were in similar situations, diagnosed with breast cancer early in their pregnancy, significant surgeries to start the battle, and 4 round of chemo endured by their own bodies as well as the tiny ones inside. After Rashel was diagnosed and went through her treatment, I thought I would not encounter women this young going through the same thing. Unfortunately more and more, it is common for young women to battle this. I say again, these women are warriors, brave and strong. Their stories bring perspective to my life, that no matter what kind of cool job I get to do, or what success is brought my way, that nothing compares to the beauty and simplicity of the blessing that life and people are. They are what matter, those that we know, those that our lives intersect with in some way, people matter.

I will share a couple of pictures and slideshows. I was able to photograph each of these women days before delivery. I haven’t yet been able to follow up with Lorrie, and baby Zachary, but will soon.

This is a shot from my time with Laura’s family in the hospital after baby Caroline was born. She was born a few weeks early, but has pulled through like a champ. Even though she has gone through 4 rounds of therapy with her mom, the awesome blue glow is not from the chemo! She had jaundice, but that has cleared up and they are safe and sound at home. Here is a slideshow.

The next image is one of my favorites I have taken in quite a while. I think mostly because it has absolutely nothing to do with me. This photo is completely made by the strength and confidence Lorrie brought into my studio. The juxtaposition of the effects of treatment and disease that has ravaged a body, against the beautiful moment of a new life being brought into this world, is mind blowing. My words can’t express what I really think of this, maybe this photo will be worth more than a thousand words. Here’s the slideshow.

Most importantly, I thank you for reading this as far as you have, but here’s the best part of the story. Both of these women after giving birth to their babies, were able to have a full body scan to determine if and where the cancer had spread. And both were completely FREE OF CANCER! I don’t care what you think, or believe, but I and many others know that this is an act of God. These women have been healed by the hand of God, as a result of His people praying and interceding for these ladies. I hope that my work draws people that don’t necessarily believe the same way that I do. I enjoy the relationships and conversations that different belief systems bring. But, I will stand on the top of any roof and shout as loud as I can, that I believe that Jesus Christ has intervened completely to show people that He is good, and He is God. I hope that this encourages you wherever you are in your journey, soli deo gloria.

A few months back I made a statement that this year would be dedicated to pursuing national editorial and advertising work. I fully expected that to happen, but for it to be a process and I was prepared for the process to take several months, even a couple of years. Believe me, it will be a continual journey, but it seems that the first of those jobs has arrived! I won’t divulge too much information, because I am new to the whole idea of national ad campaigns, and who should know, and when the should know etc. Hopefully I am being a bit overprotective, but I would rather err on the side of cautiousness. That being said, we are casting this job through people on the street. We are looking for those who might have a slight bit of shadiness to their external image, or could pull that off. I need some help! If you know someone or you are that person, please let me know. We are shooting Monday August 6th in Birmingham, and you will actually get paid! We are having a good number of young adults 20-30 to choose from, but we need a man and a woman that are more the 35-45 age range. So, if you know a good natured middle aged man or woman that is full of character and willing to have a good time being a bit silly, please let me know. You can send recent pictures to me at, studio at jasonwallis dot com (I spelled it out because I have had a good bit of spam just from internet spiders grabbing my email link). We did a couple of test shots last week with the help of Gregory and my favorite new stylist Belinda. That will give you and idea of what we are doing. Stay tuned for the finals in about a month or so!

She was on Bravo’s Project Runway season 2. Not only is she extremely talented, she is hilarious to! These are some of the dresses we photographed for a story we did on her and her work. We had a fantastic team as always, Celine on hair and makeup and our new friend Belinda Martin did the prop styling and concepting for the shots.
